Sizing ChartMy Pets Wardrobe’s Tips, Tricks & Guidelines for measuring your pet!
We sometimes get requests from customers to indicate the "correct" size for their pet when they are purchasing pet clothing, footwear or accessories. We offer information, but ultimately, this decision has to rest with the customer for a number of reasons. Foremost, pets of the same breed may differ and have different sizes based on weight, height, length and so forth. The same dog apparel will fit dogs of different breeds and of the same weight differently.
The following diagrams and information should provide a helpful guide to help you measure your pet correctly so a good fit is obtained.
To ensure a correct fit, please ensure that your pet is standing. You won't get accurate measurements if the pet is sitting or lying down. If this is difficult, offer little incentives (eg. Treats) to get them to stand still, or measure when your pet is calm and not over excited.
Don’t make a fuss of it and neither will they!
![]() Dog Clothing Measurements
In order to find the right size of clothing for your dog, please complete the following measurements with a measuring tape. If you don’t have a measuring tape use a piece of string or a shoe lace, measure them and then measure the string with a ruler or tape measure.
![]() 1. "Chest"
Is the size of your dogs chest, at the widest point, which is generally found directly behind the front legs and up and over the back, or alternatively the thickest part of the body or trunk.
It is our opinion that this is the most important measurement for clothing. If it is too small, it will not fit, if it is too big, your little one could get caught in it and not walk comfortably.
2. "Length"
The Length measurement is from the base of the neck (where their collar sits) to the base of the tail (not to the tip of the tail).
This is the most common measurement for clothing, however the back length will not matter if the chest measurement is not appropriate. Use this more as a guide to how low your shirt or dress will be on your pet's back.
3. "Neck"
The neck measurement is taken around the dogs neck where their collar would naturally sit. This size should always be measured when sizing for a collar.
![]() Collar & Harness Measurements & Information
![]() Manufacturers vary on measurements depending on a particular product. For your pet's safety and comfort, please measure for a dog collar by measuring your dog's neck, not the size of their current collar.
As a general guide, you should be able to fit two fingers (flat) easily between the tape and your dog's neck. Remember, a collar or harness shouldn't be tight around your dog's neck and it wouldn't be the exact measurement of your dog's neck. But for safety reasons....so it doesn't snag on something, it shouldn’t be too loose either. A snug fit is what you are aiming for. Not a tight one or one that chokes.
For Harness measurements please refer to the sizing table, it includes both Chest & Neck measurements, which are described in the above sections.
Note: Because collars may vary so much, please do NOT buy our collars or harnesses according to other pet store sizing charts, or current collar sizes.
My Pets Wardrobe’s Doggy Shoes, Booties & Slipper Information
For most dogs, footwear is a new concept. Some dogs will slip into shoes quite easily, others will need training.
The first time your dog tries on a pair of Dog Shoes, it will be difficult not to laugh, as the dog will generally do a little dance as they get used to the shoes, this is normal.
REMEMBER THIS IS A NEW EXPERIENCE FOR THEM!
Once you have the booties in place and fitted correctly, go out and engage in your pup's favourite activity: chasing a ball, catching a flying disk or just running. After about 15 minutes double-check the closure on the boots and adjust. This is considered the "break in" period where the upper softens and conforms to the dog's paws.
If your dog is refusing to walk or is having trouble adjusting, it may take a little longer for you to train them to wear the boots, but it is defiantly doable!!
We suggest putting the booties on your pet for short periods of time, daily, even if they do not walk in them at first, cuddles or attention to let them know it is ok will help your pet to adjust. Increase the time spent in the shoes and start to entice them with a favourite toy or treat. Eventually they will forget they are there and will walk normally as if they don’t have shoes on at all! When your pet is settled into their new booties, you and your buddy are ready to explore! Use common sense and allow some time for your dog to become accustomed to the booties on daily walks. Just as you would never go out on a big hike with new hiking boots, start off on easy hikes and work into the big ones with your dog's new footwear. Also, you wouldn’t want to stick your size 10 foot in a size 8 shoe because it would be incredibly uncomfortable! The same goes for your dog, which is why we’re here to help you measure your dog’s foot to ensure a correct comfortable fit.
When sizing them, make sure they are in a standing position, as this is the stance they will be in when walking and ensures even displacement of the paw. Place their paw on the line indicated and mark with a pen where their paw comes to on the sizing chart, this is the length measurement. There are also width measurements on the table, this is just an extra measurement which you can take and measure with a ruler.
When you have taken the measurements compare them to the sizing table. The width and length of the foot should be slightly smaller than the boot size to ensure a snug fit. ![]() UV PROTECTION – My Pets Wardrobe’s Doggy Hats & Visors
Stylish dog hats have always been popular with dog lovers and their pooches just love the extra attention they get! But they’re even more popular with today’s concern about the damaging effects of the sun. Many vets tell us how important it is to protect our dog’s eyes and sensitive skin from the harmful rays of the sun. We all have our sun hats on to protect ourselves… and we want to do the same for our favourite little friends!
![]() For proper fit, measure the length of head from ½” above dog’s brow to back of head and the width is measured between their ears.
Eyewear – K9 Optics & Doggles
Doggles are protective eyewear made just for dogs. Most dogs will readily accept Doggles after a short adjustment period. Training your dog to wear the goggles can be accomplished in a small amount of time if you follow these easy steps: #1) Don't put the goggles on your dog while indoors. Imagine yourself wearing dark tinted glasses inside. You cannot see, and neither can your dog.
#2) When you first put the goggles on your dog, don't let him paw at the glasses or roll to get them off. Reassure him that its okay. Take him immediately to bright sunlight and let him realize that he can see with them on. Walk around, get his mind off the goggles.
#3) Try to go through this routine as often as possible. The number of training sessions required depends on your dog.
Doggles protect dog's eyes from foreign objects, wind, debris and UV light. A perfect fit is ensured by using two adjustable head straps - one behind the head and one under the chin. The chin strap simply wraps under your dog's chin and snaps into place. They are very simple to use. We care about your dog's comfort. The straps are made of comfortable, plush elastic. The inside of the frames are lined with foam padding. The frames are completely flexible and will bend to wrap around your dog's face, regardless of the shape of the face. 100% UV Block, polycarbonate (Shatterproof) lenses. Three strap adjustable system to fit any shape of head. Extra wide nose bridge made to fit a dog's face. The wrap around snug-fitting frames with foam padding against the face, completely enclose the eyes with no gaps for stray light or foreign objects.
For dogs with the increasingly common eye disease, Pannus, Doggles are proving themselves very useful. It is well known that dogs with Pannus should stay out of direct sun and get protection from UV light. Doggles are a great alternative for those dogs that can't stay inside during the day.
Keep out wind and debris with Doggles Originalz.
